First of all we need to understand the meaning of the word “diet”. It derives from the Latin word “diaita” (Greek “diaita”) and it means life style.  If you look in the dictionary, diet means : a rule of alimentation for healthy or sick persons, which prescribes quantities and qualities of aliments or temporary abstinence for some foods or drinks, special eating regimen, recommended in case of illness, for keeping the health, for lowering the body weight, etc.  There are numerous diets and it would be almost impossible to enumerate all and the majority are only weight loss diets anyway.  The Mediterranean Diet it’s not a weight loss diet. Mediterranean Diet it’s the name given by the American physiologist Ancel Keys after 20 years of  intense studies made on several continents. The term “diet” in Mediterranean Diet case is improper because it’s not about an dietary program, it’s about a nutritional model

but especially behavioral, a life style passed on by generations, about eating habits based not on poorness (as some wrongly claim), but based on daily needs, on alimentary conscience, on balance and moderation. These kind of characteristics allows the ones who follows this kind of life style a greater longevity but especially a lower incidence of cardiovascular diseases. An alimentation based on bread, pasta, rice and whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, olive oil, milk and its derivates, nuts, seeds and olives, aromatic herbs, spices, eggs, fish and crustaceans, white meats and a little wine can not  be called a poor alimentation considering the great value of glucides , animal and vegetal proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals, antioxidants and fibres. A poor alimentation can be considered to be the one that doesn’t give the body the chance to extract from foods the nutrients it needs. Besides, on the bottom of Mediterranean Diet is the physical activity and on top, the sweets and red meat. They say that to eat is a pleasure. I think that to swim could be a pleasure, to eat is more of a necessity. The Mediterranean Diet says that we must eat to be healthy and live longer, because we don’t live to eat, we eat to live.
